Remember:
Keep it short and impactful. Drivers have only a few seconds to process the message.
Use visuals to amplify the quote. A striking image can make it even more memorable.
Consider your location and target audience. Who are you trying to reach with your message?
Imagine hurtling down the freeway, asphalt blurring beneath your tires, engine humming a steady lullaby. Suddenly, a giant rectangle juts out of the landscape, interrupting the monotony. You squint, trying to focus on the fleeting message splashed across its canvas. What would you want it to say? A car ad? A political slogan?

For me, that billboard wouldn’t be about selling anything. It would be a portal, a fleeting moment for connection in a world often hurtling past our own thoughts, let alone one another. But what message would bridge that gap, spark curiosity, and linger long after the tires whisper past?
The answer, perhaps, lies in numbers. Not the kind displayed on gas pumps or speed limits, but the ones that whisper about the human condition, the shared pulse of our collective journey.
A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that 63% of Americans report feeling lonely often or sometimes. That’s nearly two-thirds of us, yearning for connection, for a sense of belonging in this whirlwind of existence. Could our billboard be a beacon, a reminder that we’re not alone in this asphalt symphony?
But loneliness isn’t the only melody playing. A 2022 Gallup poll reveals that 70% of Americans believe in the power of kindness. We crave moments of compassion, of shared humanity. So, maybe our billboard whispers, “Kindness counts. One smile, one act, can change the day.”
Statistics can also be playful, igniting laughter in the rush of traffic. Imagine the billboard proclaiming, “Did you know? Squirrels plant around 176,000 trees a year, forgetting where they buried half. Nature’s secret gardeners!” A chuckle, a shared thought: a tiny bridge built in the blink of an eye.
Or perhaps, our billboard speaks to the wonder inherent in every day. A NASA report tells us there are an estimated 10 septillion stars in the observable universe. That’s a 1 followed by 22 zeros! Our billboard could whisper, “Look up. You’re hurtling through a universe teeming with mysteries. Breathe. Feel small. Feel big.”
Ultimately, my freeway billboard wouldn’t be about me or any product. It would be a mirror, reflecting back the kaleidoscope of human experience, a shared breath in the wind of our everyday journeys. It would be a reminder that in the rush of miles and minutes, we’re not so different, after all. We’re lonely, kind, curious, small yet expansive. We’re all hurtling through this universe, together. And maybe, just maybe, a fleeting billboard message can remind us of that, one passing car at a time.
So, the next time you see a blank canvas on the side of the road, imagine the stories it could tell, the connections it could spark. What would your billboard say? The answer, like the human experience itself, is full of possibilities, waiting to be written in bold, bright letters against the endless blue sky.
